Regulation

How will it be regulated?

The Environment Agency strictly regulates all EfW plants in the UK. Once planning permission for a plant is obtained, an application needs to be made for an Environmental Permit. This permitting process will ensure that the plant operates in accordance with strict EU and UK legislation and environmental standards.

Once operational, the plant will have systems in place to monitor emission levels on a real-time basis. This will cover a range of emissions such as particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and hydrogen chloride.

The monitoring data will be inspected by the Environment Agency to ensure that the plant is operating within the strict parameters set down in the permit.
