Transport

The question of how we will transport the fuel to the plant is a key consideration for us.

The pre-treated solid fuel will be delivered to the site in enclosed bulk containers, either by rail or road. We will not be involved in processing the waste material for the fuel - so no roadside refuse collection vehicles would be delivering to our plant.

Road access would be via the Griffiths Road main site entrance, but our intention is that some of the fuel would be transported to the facility by rail directly into the Tata Chemicals Europe site. We have worked closely with our partner E.ON to undertake detailed assessments of both the road and rail options. These assessments have taken into account likely traffic growth and include traffic associated with other known developments in the area.

The results show that, using Tata Chemicals Europe's existing rail links in to the site, it is possible to deliver two-thirds of the fuel needed for the plant by rail. The remaining third could be delivered to the site by road.

This will see 400,000 tonnes of fuel a year being brought to the site by rail and 200,000 tonnes by road. This will require approximately two rail deliveries a day and five HGV road deliveries per hour. Our development would result in a daily increase of about three per cent to volumes of traffic on Griffiths Road.

Road deliveries to the site will not be round the clock - they will take place between the hours of 7am and 7pm on 286 days a year. Fuel will be stored in enclosed units on site for use during the night and over weekends and Bank Holidays.

We will do all we can to resolve any concerns that residents may have about congestion occurring at the busiest times of day. We will investigate where appropriate restricting vehicle movements during peak traffic hours and also discuss working with DECC and the highway authority to support road improvements with, for example, a financial contribution towards signalling at any affected junction or traffic flow control measures.
